Fake news effect on mental health

In this era of technology and social media platforms, it has become very hard to spot and identify any fake news. Thus, it is greatly affecting our mental health and creating hoaxes. It can be difficult to distinguish what is accurate, credible information and what is just “fake news” with all the available information at our fingertips now due to the internet. Concerning our wellbeing, this is particularly true. We’re going to dig into a couple of tips in this article that you can use to make sure that what you read has hard science behind it. Research indicates that social media and the dissemination of disinformation are correlated with the hindrance of mental well-being, such as paranoia induced by false news.

Due to a lack of information about the matter, the Covid-19 pandemic has caused a global sense of confusion. As a consequence, over the past few months, the distribution of false information has significantly increased. What is sometimes referred to as an ‘infodemic’ is simply the online exchange of knowledge, which may probably include conspiracy theories, remedies, and preventive measures.

There has been a tide of Covid-19-related information since the virus broke out, which is mostly misleading or absolutely wrong. On the contrary, it could actually be devastating. There was an idea, for example, that Coronavirus was airborne, and that caused a lot of anxiety among many individuals. Due to their excessive use of social media and other technological developments, particularly during the lockdown, the younger generations have been more seriously affected by this ‘infodemic’. In reality, social media platforms are extremely common among the youth for extracting data. The sequence of hoaxes that are spread not only cause high levels of anxiety, but also addiction to social media. The number of suicide cases of university students has increased in 2020 at an alarming rate!

The infringement on mental well-being is linked to social media and the sharing of misinformation. To build awareness instead of fear, social media should be used. During these turbulent times, extensive use of social media is not advisable. Instead, it helps to maintain a sound state of mind by seeking ways to keep yourself mentally and physically active. Many startups and private organizations have come up with the idea of giving online mental counseling in this hard situation.  It is important to take action to develop resilience and adjust to the new normal during such difficult times.
